Publication History

Within ten months of its founding, HESS published volume 1 of Earth Sciences History. That 67-page journal contained nine articles, a variety of book reviews, and a calendar of events. By 1983, two issues were being produced each year, and the size of the journal essentially tripled.

Beginning in 2008, the journal (including it's earlier issues) became available online.

Special issues have been devoted to the history of European geology, Australian and New Zealand geoscience, geology in the northeastern U.S., biogeography, oceanography, and other topics.

Authors have represented many nations, from Europe to Australia and from the U.S. to the former Soviet Union.

The current editorial board consists of scholars from Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Canada, Germany, Ireland, Italy, the United States, and the United Kingdom.
